The historian's note

現代のTurkeyに位置するEphesusは、古代ギリシャの都市であり、後に重要なローマ都市となった。ローマ時代には、Asia Minorの首都として機能し、Library of Celsus、Great Theatre、古代世界の七不思議の一つであるTemple of Artemisなどの重要な構造物の所在地であった。

同市の重要性は、港の堆積や交易ルートの変化などの要因により徐々に低下した。特に19世紀後期以降の広範な考古学的発掘により、同市の大部分が体系的に明らかにされ、地中海地域で最も良好に保存された且つアクセス可能な古代遺跡の一つとなった。

1970年代までに、Ephesusは著名な国際観光地として確実に確立され、その記念碑的な遺跡を探索し、古典古代の遺物を直接体験することに熱心な来訪者を引き付けていた。同遺跡は重要な文化的および歴史的ランドマークであり続けている。
