The historian's note
この画像は、1970年代にColoradoのAnimas River Canyonを通行するDurango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad(D&SNG)の旅客列車を捉えている。同鉄道はDurangoとSilvertonの間に、3フィートのナローゲージで45マイルの線路を保有しており、劇的な山々の景色で知られた歴史的なルートである。
元々1880年代にSan Juan Mountainsから銀と金鉱石を輸送するために建設されたD&SNGは、1968年までに旅客のみを運ぶようになり、著名なヘリテージ鉄道へと転換した。1970年代までに、その主要な機能は観光であり、遠隔の山岳荒野を通ったシーニック旅行を提供していた。
