ヴィンテージの観光列車が泥っぽい山岳河川に沿って蛇行している景観で、1970年代に効率よりも風情を求めた旅行者には珍しくない光景である。黄金色の客車は崖の側面に張り付いており、最速ルートがお土産産業にとって最も利益率の高いわけではないことを思い起こさせるものである。
乗客は開いた窓から身を乗り出すことが推奨されていた。このような行為は現在ではもっぱら記憶か非常に限定的なヘリテージ鉄道にのみ見られるもので、エアコンの魅力に疑問を呈させるような風に吹かれた経験をもたらしていた。旅行者の格子模様のシャツはその時代の気さくな美学を暗示しており、石炭煙と河水の飛沫を全身に浴びるのに完璧に適していた。
此の全体の設営は、速く何処かに到着することよりも、むしろ後に不平を言うことが出来る些細な不快感が重視された時代への冒険を約束していた。時おり広大な渓谷の空白さの中で帽子をほぼ失くすというスリルを含む風景的な迂回路を提供し、すべては控えめな乗車券代金で実現された。
The historian's note
この場面は1970年代のアメリカ西部におけるナローゲージ鉄道の旅を捉えたものである。黄色い客車と山岳河川の設定で識別可能な列車は、コロラド州南西部を流れるAnimas Riverに沿って走るDurango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroadの典型的な例である。
当初は19世紀後期にSan Juan MountainsにおけるSilver and Gold鉱山からの鉱石輸送のため建設されたが、採掘事業が終了した後は主要な観光地へと転換した。1970年代までに、本線は人気の郷愁的体験を提供し、旅行者が歴史的景観を通じて本物の蒸気機関車に乗車することを可能にしていた。
開放窓客車は特徴的な要素であり、乗客に対して劇的な自然環境の没入的で、若干は露出した眺望を提供していた。この自然環境は、かつて活況を呈していた採掘産業を支えていたものである。
