誰かがこの写真を撮るためにカメラをスラグ堆積地の頂上に運んだ。つまり、その下の操業には記録する価値があったということだ。前景の輸送ベルト装置は、粉砕された岩と石炭をある堆積から別の堆積へ移動させるために存在していた。1960年代には、このような作業はまだ人間、歯車、そして下の地層が装置の投資に見合い続けるであろうという一定の信仰を必要としていた。

The historian's note

このシーンは、20世紀半ばの石炭処理操業の典型的な例を記録している。ペンシルベニア州北東部の無煙炭地域のもので、1960年代までに1世紀以上にわたって継続的に採掘されてきた地域である。煙突を備えた破砕機建屋は、生の無煙炭を処理し、出荷前にサイズと品質で分類した。前景の輸送ベルトと骨材堆積は、より早い深部採掘によって残された廃棄物から残存する石炭を抽出する、活動的な露天掘りまたはスラグ堆積操業を示唆している。

この時代、無煙炭産業は急速に衰退していた。より安いビチューマス炭、天然ガス、石油に押されていたのだ。多くの操業は新しい深孔を開くのではなく、スラグ堆積の再処理によってのみ生き残った。中距離に見える森林破壊されテラス状の斜面は、この時代の露天採掘慣行を反映している。それは業界を次の10年間で形成するであろう環境規制に先立つものであった。
