誰かがシャッターを切る前に、アーチの影の奥に大きく下がって立った。石の枠が庭を囲むことで、庭単体で見るより重要そうに見えるという理屈からである。これは1960年代における旅行写真の確立された作法であり、無数の雑誌のグラビアから学ばれたものだ――前景を暗くし、光に仕事をさせる。そうすれば観光客は、束の間、芸術家になる。

この枠が捉えているのは、何世紀も前にアンデス各地で宗教修道会によって建てられ、それを引き継いだ誰かによって今もタイル一枚一枚まで維持され続けているスペイン植民地様式の中庭である。石造りの噴水が、この標高でこれほど順調に育つ道理のない刈り込まれた生垣とヤシの木の庭の中心に据えられ、背後のタイル屋根の稜線には小さな鐘楼が静かに装飾的な役目を果たしている。白漆喰とテラコッタは、常にこのアーチ越しに眺めに来る訪問者がいることを前提とした几帳面さで維持されてきた。

屋根の向こうでは、地面が緑のアンデスの丘へと立ち上がっており、中庭の入念な幾何学模様には無頓着である。それこそが、写真家が意図したわけでは決してなかった、この写真の要点そのものである。

The historian's note

ここに写る中庭は、16世紀以降アンデス高地一帯に建てられたスペイン植民地時代の回廊庭園の伝統に属しており、多くは植民地初期に設立された修道院、女子修道院、あるいは神学校に付随するものであった。こうした中庭は一貫した構成に従っていた――中央の噴水、左右対称の花壇、周囲を取り囲むアーケードまたは回廊であり、外の通りとは異なる瞑想的な閉じた空間を提供するよう設計されていた。

ここに見える建築的細部――タイル屋根、白漆喰の石積み、ランタン状の頂部を持つ小さな塔――は、キト、クスコ、ボゴタといった都市で20世紀に入ってからも現存し実際に使用され続けた植民地時代の宗教建築に特徴的なものである。1960年代までにはこうした建築群の多くが、継続する宗教的用途と増大する観光客の来訪という両方の場となっており、庭園は概ね過去数世紀からほとんど変わらぬまま維持されていた。

屋根の向こうに見える周囲の山岳地形は、この様式の植民地時代回廊建築が集中する、標高の高いアンデスの都市群と符合するものである。
