国境に近づくことは、常に公式な自己観察の瞬間を伴い、国際的な意図を検討するための簡潔な一時停止であった。カナダ政府は、1970年代にさえ、自国への入国には停止する意図の明確な表示が必要であると判断していた。
「Welcome to Canada」という標識が英語とフランス語の両方で掲げられていた。これは、多言語による宣言が歓迎の中核要素であったためであり、その後には、より不親切ではあるが、全く必要な「Please stop and report」という標識が続いた。これは、旅行者が実際に指示に従うであろうという仮定に基づいて構築されたシステムであった。

この画像は、1970年代のカナダ国境通過ステーションを、検査ブースに近づく車両から見た様子として描いている。このようなステーションは、税関および移民管理の重要なポイントとして機能し、Canada と United States の間の人と物資の流れを管理していた。
