The historian's note

北米のボリアルおよび準ボリアル地域での火災後の森林再生は、20世紀半ばに森林科学および土地管理写真の標準的なテーマとなった。北米西部、特にロッキー山脈およびパシフィック北西部地域の大規模林野火災は、数十年間可視のままであった枯れ木—立ち枯れ木—の広大な林分を残した。ここに見える焦げた高い樹木と密集した若い下生植生の混合は、重大な林野火災後の2〜4十年間を特徴とし、その間耐陰性針葉樹(トウヒ、モミ)が灰によって露出し豊かにされた鉱物質土壌に定着する。1940年代までに、このような光景は連邦森林機関(U.S. Forest Service、Canadian National Parks Service)および大学によって生態学的観察プログラムおよび管理研究の一部として記録されていた。無傷の雪およびカラー写真処理は、これが偶発的な記録ではなく献身的な科学的またはアーカイブ的遠征であったことを示唆している。
