岩石の峰が密集した亜高山帯林の上に聳え立ち、その露出した斜面は霜で砕かれた岩屑の混沌とした野原であり、土壌も根も決して保つことはない。この峰は冬と重力の仕事の記念碑であり、誰かがそれを写真に収めるために十分な距離を移動したということは、その景観が努力に値すると信じていたことを意味する。尾根線に密集しているコニファー林—おそらくダグラスモミと亜高山帯モミ—は樹木限界の妥協点を表しており、この高度で生存する林は上方への成長を止め、同一の狭い樹冠の密集した塊に自らを圧縮することを学んだ林である。空中に漂うかすみは高所の午後の光に典型的なもので、距離と薄い大気が協力して細部を消し、中景を単一の柔らかい壁に平坦化させる。これは1940年代〜1950年代型の風景写真であり、注意深く構成され、抑制された色調で表現され、誰もまだその上に何も建設していない時の野生地がどのように見えるかを捉えている。

The historian's note

太平洋岸北西部地域の高い亜高山帯峰—おそらくCascade Rangeまたは北部Rocky山脈内—は、野生地保全への公共の関心が高まる中、20世紀中盤の風景写真家にとって人気のある主題であった。ここに見える樹木限界の生態は、気温と風のストレスが林の完全な成長を妨げる自然の高度限界を反映しており、これらの密集した風によって剪定された林分は高山ツンドラと山地林の間の生存境界を示す。そのような峰の写真は、国立公園と野生地域が正式に指定・保護されていた時期に美的および記録的な目的を果たし、未改変の高山地形の景観記録は保全の価値があるアメリカの野生風景の文化的指標となった。
