Si è posizionato alla ringhiera della poppa nel modo in cui i turisti facevano sempre prima che gli smartphone rendessero la decisione automatica, occhiali da sole indossati, di spalle alla fotocamera, perché negli anni 1960 un uomo su un traghetto credeva che la vista esistesse per essere guardato piuttosto che fotografato mentre la guardava. Dietro di lui lo skyline di West End si innalza nelle torri squadrate e ottimiste che Vancouver stava costruendo durante quel decennio, prova che una città poteva trasformare una penisola in una cartolina in circa dieci anni. Le montagne North Shore se ne stavano dietro gli edifici senza fare nulla di particolare, che era esattamente il loro lavoro.

La ringhiera su cui si appoggia appartiene a una nave BC Ferries che percorre la traversata che migliaia di pendolari e vacanzieri facevano ogni settimana, una routine così ordinaria che nessuno pensava di annotare quale fosse il viaggio. È vestito per un viaggio in barca con un windbreaker costruito per un clima che non si era ancora deciso a essere brutto.
