Er hat sich an die Reling des Achterdecks gestellt, wie Touristen es immer taten, bevor Smartphones diese Entscheidung automatisch machten – Sonnenbrille auf, dem Objektiv den Rücken zugewandt – weil ein Mann auf einer Fähre in den 1960er Jahren davon überzeugt war, dass die Aussicht dazu da war, angesehen zu werden, nicht um sein eigenes Schauen zu fotografieren. Hinter ihm erhebt sich die Skyline von West End in den kantigen, optimistischen Türmen, die Vancouver in jenem Jahrzehnt hochzog, ein Beweis dafür, dass eine Stadt eine Halbinsel in etwa zehn Jahren in eine Postkarte verwandeln konnte. Die North Shore Mountains sitzen hinter den Gebäuden und tun nichts Besonderes, was genau ihre Aufgabe war.

Die Reling, an der er lehnt, gehört einem BC Ferries Schiff, das die Überfahrt macht, die Tausende von Pendlern und Urlaubern jede Woche unternahmen – eine Routine so alltäglich, dass niemand daran dachte, welche Abfahrt es war. Er trägt einen Windbreaker für eine Bootsfahrt, angefertigt für Wetter, das sich noch nicht für schlecht entschieden hatte. Was immer er dachte, es war wahrscheinlich nicht, dass später jemand dieses Dia nach Hinweisen auf eine Jacke untersuchen würde.
