Someone, at some point, decided that hanging banners high in a grand hall was an excellent way to commemorate things that were, presumably, important at the time. These particular pieces of cloth display heraldic devices, which meant something specific to people back when knowing who owned what land, or which family line was superior, was a full-time occupation.
Now, in the 1950s, these same banners mostly serve to demonstrate that the building is old and contains history. The precise victories or alliances they represent are largely irrelevant, much like most of the finer points of 14th-century land disputes.
They just hang there, providing a visual argument for the enduring quality of a good fabric and the transient nature of human significance, all bathed in the confident glow of daylight through medieval windows.
The historian's note
This photograph depicts the interior of Westminster Abbey in London, specifically the Henry VII Lady Chapel, during the 1950s. The chapel serves as the spiritual home for the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, and the numerous heraldic banners displayed belong to the Knights Grand Cross of the Order.
These banners are installed upon a knight's induction, representing their lineage and achievements, a tradition that has continued for centuries. New banners are added as new knights are invested, contributing to the chapel's unique visual character.
The Henry VII Chapel, a masterpiece of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, was completed in 1519. Its large, ornate windows and intricate fan vaulting are defining features, making it a significant site for both royal ceremonies and historical appreciation within the Abbey.
