The historian's note
Cinderella Castle is the iconic centrepiece of Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Opened with the park in 1971, it stands as a prominent symbol of the resort and its immersive themed entertainment.
The design of Cinderella Castle was inspired by a variety of real and fictional palaces, most notably Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, and the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in California. Standing 189 feet tall, it was designed to be visually impressive and serve as a focal point for the park.
During the 1970s, the castle quickly became a major cultural landmark and a symbol of modern tourism and family entertainment, drawing millions of visitors annually. It represented a new era of large-scale, experience-driven leisure destinations.
