On the image

Someone stood at a window with a camera loaded for a different kind of picture and pointed it instead at a young fir tree bent under an overnight snowfall, the gabled houses behind it gone soft and blue in the storm light. This is the amateur photographer's winter reflex of the era: the season had just handed over a scene that looked, briefly, like the front of a greeting card, and the obligation to record it before the sun or a plow truck ruined the effect was widely felt and rarely resisted.

The tree itself is doing something trees do every winter without applause, holding a few hundred pounds of snow on branches never engineered for the job, sagging into the exact shape a Christmas card illustrator would draw if asked to draw a Christmas card tree. Behind it the neighbourhood goes on being an ordinary neighbourhood, its porches and windows blurred into an unimportant backdrop, because on this particular morning the tree was the only thing anyone had time to notice.

The historian's note

The scene documents an unremarkable but visually distinctive weather event in a North American residential neighbourhood during the 1960s: a heavy overnight snowfall accumulating on an ornamental or volunteer conifer in a front yard, with wood-frame houses of a common early twentieth-century vernacular style visible behind it.
