Someone stood in the cold long enough to get this exposure right, which in the 1960s meant guessing at a light metre reading for a sky that was technically daytime and looked like midnight. The spruce on the right has given up trying to look like a Christmas-card tree and is simply holding as much snow as physics will allow, while the bare birch beside it has apparently decided that dignity is optional at these latitudes.

The orange sliver at the horizon is doing the job of an entire sunset in about twenty minutes, which is standard behaviour for winter this far north, where daylight is less a condition than a brief visiting privilege. Power lines cut across the frame with the confidence of an infrastructure system built to work in weather that would stop most other systems cold, literally.

Whoever took this believed the scene was worth preserving because it was beautiful, and it was, but the deeper truth is that anyone living here had simply run out of daylight and had nothing better to photograph before the cold made further picture-taking a bad idea.
