On the image
Building a town on top of a giant, ancient volcano's rim might seem like a project with inherent flaws, but the inhabitants of Santorini have managed it for centuries. The white settlements cling to the cliffs, demonstrating human stubbornness when confronted with an excellent view and the opportunity to charge visitors for it.
The ships in the caldera below suggest a booming tourist trade, even in the 1970s, as people discovered that extreme topography makes for picturesque postcards. One can only imagine the planning meetings involved in connecting the sea-level docks to the cliff-top towns via switchback paths, undoubtedly involving multiple budget overruns and the occasional donkey incident.
It was always about getting people up there, to witness the dramatic results of a massive eruption, and then providing a place for them to sleep, or at least buy a souvenir. The whole operation runs on the premise that a good enough vista will make people forget all their logistical woes.
The historian's note
The image captures the iconic caldera of Santorini (Thera), a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, Greece, during the 1970s. The white settlements visible along the rim are characteristic of the Cycladic architecture found in villages such as Fira and Oia, built on the steep slopes created by the Minoan eruption around 1600 BCE.
Santorini began its ascent as a popular international tourist destination in the mid-20th century, with the 1970s marking a significant period of growth in Mediterranean travel. The presence of both cargo and passenger ships in the caldera indicates the island's reliance on maritime transport for both goods and increasing numbers of visitors.
The island's unique geological formation, vibrant whitewashed villages, and stunning sunsets have made it a globally recognised landmark and a critical component of the Greek tourism economy.
