Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest during the 1960s or 1970s, someone decided that taking a colour slide of a sunset over a moored fishing fleet was the kind of thing worth preserving, which meant believing the moment had a permanence it did not possess. The boats sit at anchor in the middle distance, anonymous and small, their hulls reduced to silhouettes by the failing light—the kind of working vessels that appeared in every harbour of the region and that nobody photographed twice. The sky dominates the frame with the deliberate composition of a travel poster, purple and gold clouds arranged as though to prove that natural light could be improved by a colour-saturated film stock, which it could not. What the photographer actually captured was the last hour before darkness, the boats waiting for morning, and the American habit of treating ordinary industrial scenes as opportunities for mood.
The historian's note
This is a colour slide of a moored commercial fishing fleet on a Pacific Northwest lake or tidewater estuary, likely taken between 1965 and 1975 based on the film stock's characteristic colour palette and saturation. The boats appear to be small seine or gill-net vessels typical of regional fisheries during the post-war boom period when Alaska and Washington fisheries were still operating under relatively unrestricted seasonal quotas. The vantage is from the water or a shoreline promontory, and the mountainous shoreline visible across the water is consistent with Puget Sound or a similar Pacific coastal water system. Colour slide photography of working maritime scenes became common during this period as part of both commercial tourism and amateur documentation of regional industries before mechanization and regulatory changes altered their character.
