On the image

Someone pulled the car over for this, which in the 1950s was practically a civic duty. The interstate highway system was still a rumour, national park attendance was climbing every summer, and a family with a Kodak and a full tank of petrol felt obliged to document any mountain that looked sufficiently mountainous.

The sagebrush stretching to the tree line was not considered photogenic by the standards of the day, being merely the ten thousand acres a tourist had to drive through to reach the good part. Nobody in the car thought to write down which peak this was, on the confident assumption that the label was self-evident and would remain so forever. It did not.

The result is a slide of real geography with no name attached, which is either an oversight or an accurate summary of how most people experience scenery: enthusiastically, and without taking notes.

The historian's note

This scene documents the sagebrush steppe ecosystem characteristic of the intermountain basins east of the Rocky Mountain divide, likely in Wyoming or an adjoining state, where big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominates the high-desert flats below coniferous tree lines. Such terrain was, and remains, common approach country to the region's national parks and forests.

The 1950s marked a significant boom in American motor tourism to the Rocky Mountain West, driven by postwar prosperity, expanding personal vehicle ownership, and the popularisation of colour slide photography as a means of recording family travel. National parks in this region saw visitation roughly double through the decade as families undertook long-distance driving holidays previously uncommon before the war.

No structure, road, or human figure appears in the frame, consistent with the numerous unannotated scenic snapshots produced by amateur travellers of the period, taken to mark a personal itinerary rather than to record a specific named landmark.
