Visiting ancient ruins in Rome during the 1970s was a necessary part of any European grand tour, an educational pilgrimage that often involved standing in the heat and looking at broken rocks. The itinerary demanded a certain reverence, even if the rocks themselves offered little in the way of explanation for their present condition.
A dome of a Baroque church stands proudly in the distance, having survived the centuries mostly intact, unlike its ancient neighbours which are still struggling to keep their roof on. The tourists dutifully observe the remnants of civilisations past, perhaps wondering if their own vacation photos would one day be considered historic artefacts.
One woman, equipped with period-appropriate large sunglasses, pauses her historical contemplation just long enough to acknowledge the photographer. Her gaze suggests she understands that documenting the act of observing history is almost as important as the history itself.
The historian's note
This photograph captures a scene within the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy, during the 1970s. In the background, the dome of Santi Luca e Martina is prominently visible, a Baroque church designed by Pietro da Cortona located at the edge of the Forum.
The Roman Forum was the centre of public life in ancient Rome, hosting elections, public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches. By the 1970s, it was a major archaeological site and a significant tourist destination, representing millennia of history.
The site features numerous ruins of temples, basilicas, and other government buildings from the Republican and Imperial eras. Its preservation and ongoing archaeological study provide invaluable insight into Roman civilisation and urban planning.
