They arrived in crowds, ready to be impressed by centuries of accumulated stone and religious authority, a task the building was designed to handle with quiet efficiency.
A significant portion of the crowd comprises individuals in traditional religious habits, which served as a clear uniform in an era when most public dress was already becoming less formal. This uniformity provided a sense of visual order in a mass of people otherwise indistinguishable from any other tourist group.

The historian's note
St. Peter's Basilica, located within Vatican City, is one of the most renowned works of Renaissance architecture and a significant site for Catholic pilgrimage. Consecrated in 1626, it stands as the burial site of Saint Peter, one of Jesus's apostles and the first Pope.
During the 1970s, Vatican City continued to attract millions of visitors annually, including religious pilgrims, tourists, and scholars. The presence of numerous religious figures, such as the nuns visible in the crowd, reflects the basilica's enduring role as a spiritual centre.
The basilica's design involved contributions from prominent architects like Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, making it a monumental symbol of the Catholic Church's power and artistic patronage.
