The sheer scale of this ancient cathedral facade ensures that even in the 1970s, tourists posed dutifully before it, attempting to capture a piece of history that vastly predated their bell-bottoms. Its multitude of arches and intricate marble work, meant to inspire awe in medieval parishioners, still manages to impress, despite the inevitable wear of centuries.
Many visitors mill about on the green grass and stone pathways, a scattered collection of people dressed in the practical, casual styles of the era, looking at something built with a level of dedication and craftsmanship rarely seen in their own disposable culture. They are here because one is *supposed* to be here, having travelled a considerable distance for the privilege of standing in front of very old stone.
Each person is on their vacation, momentarily part of the cathedral's long story, before they move on to the next historical site or back to their hotel. The building, however, will remain, continuing its silent work of standing there, waiting for the next generation of temporary observers.
The historian's note
This image depicts the facade of the Duomo di Pisa (Pisa Cathedral) in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. Construction of the cathedral began in 1063 and represents a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, particularly the Pisan Romanesque style, characterised by its extensive use of arcading, marble incrustation, and decorative elements.
The cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of a monumental complex that also includes the Baptistery, the Campanile (Leaning Tower), and the Camposanto Monumentale. Its design was influential throughout Tuscany and beyond, showcasing the wealth and power of the Maritime Republic of Pisa during the medieval period.
By the 1970s, as shown in this photograph, the Piazza dei Miracoli had long been established as a major international tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its unique architectural ensemble and historical significance.
