Someone brought a can of white paint into this canyon and left the sort of monument nobody asked for: HARRY ANN, DENNY JAN BUNNY, names stacked on the rock face like a ledger of people who wanted the mountain to remember them. This was a genuine roadside custom in the postwar West, where certain canyons and rock cuts along the tourist routes accumulated decades of painted names the way a guestbook accumulates signatures, except permanent and visible from the road.
A figure in a white shirt picks a path through the tumbled boulders below the largest inscriptions, doing the ordinary work of exploring a wash after a rockslide, unaware or unbothered that he is standing in what amounts to an open-air scrapbook. The scrub oak and grass growing up through the scree suggest a season after spring rain, briefly green before the desert took the colour back. Whoever painted those names assumed the rock would outlast the memory of why it mattered, and on that one point history has proven them exactly right.
The canyon itself is doing what canyons do, holding heat and shade in the same fifty feet, indifferent to the fact that it has been turned into a bulletin board.
