By 1960, the vast majority of personal transportation involved internal combustion and varying degrees of chrome, but some still preferred the direct application of hay. These two individuals, blurred into motion, represented a certain confidence in methods that most considered entirely historical.

The historian's note

This image depicts a horse-drawn buggy, a form of transportation maintained by certain religious communities, such as the Old Order Amish and Mennonites, in the United States and Canada. In 1960, whilst cars dominated American roads, these communities continued to rely on buggies for daily travel, adhering to their traditional way of life and religious tenets that emphasise separation from modern technology.

The use of buggies was and remains a visible symbol of their cultural and religious identity, distinguishing them from the broader society. This practice also necessitated specific infrastructure considerations, including designated buggy lanes or parking at businesses in areas with large Old Order populations.
