Building a major sanctuary on a mountain meant that piety had a clear physical cost of entry. The idea was presumably that if you wanted to get closer to the heavens, you had to earn it through an arduous, oxygen-deprived climb.
Such an approach also ensured that only the most dedicated or the most physically fit would make it to Sunday service. Later, they added a winding road, because even the most devout eventually realised convenience was a virtue too.
The entire complex looks down on the city, a permanent architectural reminder of priorities. It confidently asserts its presence, as if daring the modern world to ignore centuries of established spiritual real estate.
The historian's note
This image depicts the Basílica Santuario del Señor Caído de Monserrate (Sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate) on Monserrate Mountain, overlooking Bogotá, Colombia, in the 1970s. The site has been a significant pilgrimage destination since the 17th century, with the current basilica completed in 1925.
Monserrate is one of the two main mountains that frame the eastern side of Bogotá. It is a major tourist and religious attraction, offering panoramic views of the city. Access to the sanctuary is via a funicular, a cable car (teleférico), or a pedestrian path.
The presence of the sanctuary on such a prominent geographical feature underscores its cultural and spiritual importance to the region and its inhabitants, serving as both a religious landmark and a symbol of Bogotá.
