Someone in the 1960s pointed a camera at a town that was never meant to be lived in, only admired at one-twenty-fifth scale, and got the water tower, the gabled row houses, and a bandstand full of figures too small to have opinions. Madurodam was built in the early 1950s as a miniature tribute to Dutch architecture, and by the following decade it had become the kind of stop where every visiting family took the identical photograph, because the whole point of a model village is that it holds still and asks nothing of you.
The little Dutch flag standing at attention near the path was placed there with the same seriousness the real country applies to its actual flags, which is either patriotic or slightly funny depending on how literally you take a town built for people six inches tall. A numbered marker, "98," sits on the lawn like a museum label, suggesting this cluster of miniature gables was itemised in a guidebook somewhere, cross-referenced against an actual building in an actual Dutch city that never got told it had been shrunk.
Tourists in ordinary human scale walk the paths at the frame's edge, dwarfing the town they came to see, which is the one honest thing in the whole arrangement. Everyone in Madurodam is enormous compared to the buildings and small compared to the ambition behind them, an entire country's architecture rendered pocket-sized so that visitors could feel, briefly, like benevolent giants.
