On the image

The montera does the talking before the woman wearing it ever says a word. In the Cusco highlands a flat black hat trimmed in gold thread and worn tilted just so tells anyone paying attention which valley she is from, who wove her skirt, and roughly what she is worth to marry, a whole census system built into felt and braid that outsiders mistake for quaint decoration.

She moves through the crowd with a child at her shoulder and another balanced somewhere behind her in the sling of cloth every Andean mother treats as a third arm, the market day pulling in more hats and more opinions than the plaza was built to hold. Nobody here is posing. They are shopping, gossiping, and keeping track of children, which in 1960s highland Peru counted as multitasking long before the word existed.

A boy in the foreground has the particular scowl of a child being dragged somewhere he did not choose, which is the one universal constant of every market day photographed anywhere on earth.
