Die Montera spricht, bevor die Frau, die sie trägt, ein Wort sagt. In den Hochlandregionen von Cusco verrät ein flacher schwarzer Hut mit Goldfäden, gerade eben schief genug getragen, jedem, der aufpasst, aus welchem Tal sie stammt, wer ihren Rock gewebt hat und ungefähr, was sie zur Heirat wert ist – ein ganzes Volkszählungssystem aus Filz und Borte, das Außenstehende für niedliche Dekoration halten.

Sie bewegt sich durch die Menge, ein Kind auf der Schulter und ein weiteres irgendwo hinter ihr im Tuch ausgeglichen, das jede Andenmutter als dritten Arm behandelt, der Markttag bringt mehr Hüte und mehr Meinungen herein, als der Platz aufnehmen kann. Niemand hier posiert. Sie kaufen, klatschen und passen auf die Kinder auf, was in den 1960er Jahren im peruanischen Hochland als Multitasking zählte, lange bevor das Wort existierte.

Ein Junge im Vordergrund hat den besonderen Schmollmund eines Kindes, das irgendwohin geschleift wird, wo er nicht hinwollte, und das ist die einzige universelle Konstante auf jedem Markttagsfoto, das überall auf der Erde gemacht wurde.
