On the image
Someone, many centuries ago, decided that a perfectly smooth, plain wall was an unacceptable state of affairs. This led to countless hours of labour, meticulously cutting small, oddly shaped pieces of tile. The goal was to create a pattern that would probably still be there long after everyone involved had become dust.
In the 1970s, tourists would pause to marvel at this dedication, probably wondering if their own lives had quite enough geometrically precise, hand-cut adornment. The tiles themselves are just small pieces of fired clay, but arranged correctly, they achieve a kind of timeless bureaucratic efficiency in their complexity.
It's the kind of project where the person supervising might have started with a simple sketch and ended up with a lifetime achievement award, mostly for not going completely insane during the process.
The historian's note
This image captures an intricate example of Zellige, a mosaic tilework technique characteristic of Islamic Moroccan architecture. Originating in the 10th century and reaching its peak in the 14th century, Zellige is renowned for its elaborate geometric patterns, created by individually hand-chiselled glazed tiles, or 'zellij', set into a plaster base.
The artistry of Zellige reflects a deep understanding of mathematics and geometry, typically eschewing figural representations in favour of complex star patterns, rosettes, and interweaving linear designs. These mosaics adorn walls, floors, and fountains in mosques, madrasas, palaces, and private homes across North Africa and Andalusia.
In the 1970s, as global travel became more accessible, sites featuring such traditional craftsmanship, often found in historical cities like Fes or Marrakech, became popular destinations for those seeking cultural immersion and appreciating ancient architectural techniques.
