Someone rode two cable cars to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain specifically to confirm that Copacabana Beach curves the way postcards say it does. It does. The tourist stands where every visitor to Rio has stood since the cable car opened in the 1910s, looking down at a beach that had already become international shorthand for glamour, sunburn, and good posture.

By the 1960s Copacabana's seafront apartment blocks had filled in almost the entire crescent, a wall of white concrete built on the confident assumption that the ocean would keep behaving itself and the view would always be worth the mortgage. From this height the famous pavement mosaic is invisible and the bathers are invisible and the whole engineered vanity of the neighbourhood reduces to a pale sliver of sand holding back a very large, very blue reminder of scale.

The camera also caught the offshore islands sitting flat and grey in the haze, doing nothing in particular, which is the correct amount of activity for an island. Whoever took this understood that the photograph's whole job was the shape of the bay, and left the foreground rock and scrub to do what foreground rock and scrub have always done here: frame the view and get none of the credit.
