Building a thriving community within a massive rock overhang seemed like a logical architectural choice for the Ancestral Puebloans, offering natural shelter and defensive advantages. It's unclear if they also enjoyed the reduced utility bills from having fewer exterior walls exposed to the elements.
Daily life here involved a lot of climbing. Ladders connected various levels and structures, suggesting that physical fitness was not an elective but a core requirement for residents. The idea of a 'bad commute' probably meant a dropped basket of supplies or a missed handhold.
Eventually, they left. The reasons are still debated, but one suspects that after generations of hauling water up a cliff and dealing with limited arable land, some just decided a place with easier access to a supermarket and flat ground was worth the move.
The historian's note
This image depicts Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America, located within Mesa Verde National Park in Montezuma County, Colorado. Constructed by the Ancestral Puebloans between approximately 1190 CE and 1260 CE, it once housed around 100 people and features over 150 rooms and 23 kivas.
Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 to preserve these unique archaeological sites and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structures offer significant insight into the advanced architectural, social, and spiritual practices of the Ancestral Puebloans, who inhabited the Four Corners region for over 700 years.
The site was mysteriously abandoned by its inhabitants around 1300 CE, likely due to a combination of resource depletion, prolonged drought, and social or political factors.
