On the image

The Earth, in its unending pursuit of complex, multi-layered solutions, decided that building up a cliff face like this was an excellent use of several million years. Various rock types were deposited, uplifted, and then carved into distinct, visible strata, an impressive display of nature's administrative efficiency.

Each layer represents a different geological memo, filed sequentially, documenting changing conditions that no one alive today can recall. The robust basalt at the top provides structural integrity, whilst the underlying sediments are more of a "suggestion" to remain in place, an idea constantly being renegotiated by the forces of erosion.

It's a long-term project, this cliff, casually displaying eons of work for anyone who happens to look. The 1970s camera recorded this particular stage, capturing a moment in geological time that feels both ancient and utterly indifferent to human observation.

The historian's note

This image from the 1970s captures a geological cross-section, likely exposed through natural erosion or a man-made cut in a canyon or arid region. The upper section features fractured, blocky rock, characteristic of igneous formations such as basalt flows or columnar jointing.

Beneath the primary rock layer, distinct strata of sedimentary material are visible. These layers, varying in colour from reddish-brown to lighter greys and yellows, indicate different depositional environments and mineral compositions, possibly involving volcanic ash, weathered rock, or ancient soil horizons.

The sharp delineation between the solid rock cap and the unconsolidated, layered sediments below demonstrates classic geological stratification and the process of differential erosion, where softer materials erode more quickly, creating overhangs and slopes.
