Someone stood in a dim chapel or gift shop in the 1960s, aimed a box camera at a glass case, and pressed the shutter with total confidence that the picture would come out. Inside the case sat a hand-carved wooden tableau, the kind of devotional folk-art diorama that took some anonymous carver a winter or two to finish: tiny figures under an arcaded roof, a procession of animals filing past in wood-grain profile, the whole miniature village lit by a single bulb doing its best impression of divine light.

The photographer's mistake was universal for the era. Cameras built for sunny vacations were pointed, without hesitation, at low light behind glass, on the theory that if the eye could see it, the film would too. It could not, and the flash it fired back a blue smear where a figure should have been, proof that faith in one's equipment often exceeded the equipment's actual abilities.

What survives is not the carving but the failed attempt to capture it, which is its own kind of period document. Every roadside shrine and pilgrimage stop from that decade has one of these in someone's shoebox: a blurred homage to craftsmanship, taken by a tourist who was already thinking about lunch.
