On the image

Flying over the Arctic in the 1950s meant hours of looking at ice and water, often with a purpose that felt vital to national security or scientific advancement. Pilots knew these routes intimately, likely charting them from fixed-wing aircraft that seemed advanced at the time. The vast, indifferent expanse stretched below, waiting for someone to find something meaningful in its patterns.
