A straight reach of river runs between twin walls of mature deciduous trees, the water reflecting a blue so vivid it seems to announce the photographer's color film stock the way a peacock announces itself. The banks are crowded with sycamores and cottonwoods grown thick enough to shade the water into near-total stillness, the kind of riverside landscape that once suggested the American interior was inexhaustible and worth documenting in color precisely because color photography had just become reliable enough to prove it to people who might never see a river in person. A single power line crosses overhead, a small concession to the fact that by the 1950s even the remotest-looking natural scenes had already been wired. The composition reads as a straightforward documentary record—no people, no narrative—which is itself the artifact: someone stopped to photograph an ordinary Midwestern river as though the ordinary needed witnessing.
