On the image

Someone stood at the edge of this slope with a camera and the settled conviction that bare dirt was worth recording, which by the standards of the era it was. The 1950s were the golden age of the land survey photograph, when foresters and soil scientists fanned out across the western ranges convinced that a picture of erosion, properly filed, could keep it from happening again somewhere else.

The scar itself does not care about any of this. A slab of hillside has sloughed away in ribbed layers, taking a stand of young trees down with it, their bare trunks now lying crosswise on the slope like something that fell asleep mid-collapse. Wildflowers have already moved into the undisturbed margin, doing the slow unglamorous work that no survey photograph gets credit for.

Whatever grazing, logging, or simple gravity started this, the person behind the camera photographed it the way a coroner photographs a scene: with total professional detachment and the quiet hope that the picture would be useful evidence later. It mostly was not. It just sat in a slide box, outlasting the survey, the surveyor, and probably the trail that used to run past here.

The historian's note

Bare, striated slopes of this kind, exposed subsoil cut in horizontal bands by slumping, were routinely documented by U.S. Forest Service and Soil Conservation Service field staff during the 1950s as part of ongoing rangeland and watershed erosion surveys. These programs expanded significantly after the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, when federal agencies began systematic photographic monitoring of slope failure, overgrazing damage, and logging-related erosion across mountain forest lands in the western United States.

The fallen timber embedded in the scar and the pattern of exposed, layered soil are consistent with a rotational slump failure, a common occurrence on steep, poorly consolidated slopes following heavy snowmelt or sustained rainfall. Such sites were often revisited over successive seasons to track revegetation, since documenting recovery rates was as central to mid-century land management practice as documenting the initial damage.
