Alguém colocou este bebê contra a parte mais clara do quintal e apontou uma câmera para ele, com a confiante teoria de que mais céu significava uma foto melhor. Não foi assim. O resultado é um rosto renderizado em detalhe perfeito e paciente, e um fundo reduzido ao tipo de brilho esmaecido que fotógrafos amadores dos anos 1960 aceitavam como o custo de fazer negócios ao ar livre sem um fotômetro de flash.

O babador de algodão xadrez pregueado, do tipo com borda de renda festonada, era roupa infantil padrão da década, costurada ou comprada especificamente para ocasiões exatamente como esta. O braço de alguém é visível na borda do quadro, segurando a criança para inspeção, fazendo o trabalho real de babá enquanto não recebia nenhum crédito fotográfico.

O bebê, por sua vez, olha para a câmera com o ceticismo plano e desinteressado comum a bebês que ainda não aprenderam que uma lente é suposta significar algo. Seria dito a ele mais tarde que esta era uma foto muito importante. Ele não tinha opinião sobre o assunto naquela época.
