A white Samoyed lies on a clipped farmyard lawn with the satisfied expression of a dog who has correctly identified his one job — being decorative — and is performing it at a professional level. Behind him, a white clapboard farmhouse with its four-pane window and a border of untamed cottage-garden flowers marks this as the kind of working rural property where the lawn was kept neat precisely because everything beyond the split-rail fence was not. The dark blue postwar automobile half-visible in the drive pins the decade as firmly as anything; this was the era when a farm family might own a proper car and a purebred dog and still haul their own firewood. The Samoyed, bred for Siberian sledding and famously indifferent to hard weather, has chosen the sunny patch in the middle of the grass, which is the choice anyone would make. Whoever pointed the camera at him wanted posterity to know this dog existed and was excellent, and on that point posterity can offer no argument.
