On the image

Sometime in the 1950s, a man in pressed white slacks and a white shirt reached into a heavily loaded citrus tree and held the pose long enough for someone to get the shot. This was the Florida vacation ritual: you drove past the groves on US-1 or Route 27, pulled over at the first opportunity, and documented proof that oranges actually grew on trees, a fact that apparently required personal confirmation by every northern visitor who ever came south.

The grove itself is the real subject — rows of trees bearing hard green fruit, a cabbage palm rising behind them, and grass clipped between the rows the way commercial Florida groves were kept in that era. This was citrus country at its confident peak, before canker and greening had entered anyone's vocabulary, when Florida orange juice was simply what America drank for breakfast and nobody saw a reason that would ever change.

He is grinning at the camera with the satisfaction of a man who has touched a tree and called it an experience. The grove is indifferent to the tribute.
