Nara Park's sika deer had been considered messengers of the gods for over a thousand years before the postwar tourism industry discovered that handing foreigners crackers and pointing them at the herd made for an excellent photograph. The deer, long since demoted from divine emissary to professional opportunist, had developed a precise understanding of who was carrying food and what leverage a rearing fawn could apply to extract it faster.
The woman in the headscarf is experiencing the logical conclusion of that arrangement. One deer has gone up on its hind legs to reach her hand; several others press in from the sides with the focused patience of animals that have done this many times today. Her expression is the universal look of someone who believed she was in charge of this interaction.
For a Western visitor in the 1950s, Japan was still exotic enough that 'feeding the sacred deer in an ancient imperial capital' read as a serene cultural encounter. The deer had a different understanding of the transaction, and they are clearly winning it.
