Sometime in the late 1950s, an American family drove the loop road through Yellowstone and parked the station wagon long enough to stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for the obligatory proof-of-presence photograph. The mother is dressed as though she expected the wilderness to be more formal about the occasion — a print day dress, heeled shoes, a park brochure in hand — because in that era the national park was understood as a destination you dressed up for, not a place you dressed down for. The older girl has leaned into a more practical interpretation of summer in Wyoming, arriving in red shorts and flat shoes that were wrong for canyon rims in a more useful way than her mother's heels. The younger child has arranged herself against the bleached rock with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who has been scenically appreciative for several hours and is finished. The canyon walls dropping behind them into the Yellowstone River gorge represent one of the more dramatic geological formations in North America, a fact the family appears to regard with polite respect, having now confirmed it exists.
