Somewhere on a flat, marshy stretch of the American East Coast, two men are in the middle of rebuilding a small boathouse the hard way — by hand, with a cement mixer and whatever lumber survived whatever came before. The heap of collapsed roofing and bent framing in the foreground suggests the project began with a demolition rather than a plan, which in the 1950s was simply called getting started.

The sand pile near the foreground represents the era's confidence that two men, a dog, and a weekend could solve most structural problems if enough raw material was on site. The boathouse itself, white-painted and sitting directly on the water's edge in the manner of a structure that has never once considered flood insurance, looks like it has already survived one event it shouldn't have and is about to be made slightly more optimistic.

What the camera caught, without any of the three parties noticing, is the gap between the scale of the wreckage and the scale of the workforce — a ratio that the postwar American homeowner consistently declined to find discouraging.
