On the image

Two women stand arm in arm at the edge of a covered dock, their backs to the camera, watching a fleet of glass-bottom tour boats idle on a spring-fed river flanked by dense subtropical palms and cypress. The woman on the left wears a green strapless top with blue shorts; her companion is in a slate-blue day dress — resort wear that marks this as a deliberate vacation rather than an accidental afternoon. Silver Springs, Florida was the country's original glass-bottom boat attraction, a distinction its operators advertised without irony alongside Tarzan films that had been shot in its waters. A young girl in a white eyelet top lingers at the left edge, already restless, which is the correct response to being brought somewhere specifically to look at things through a boat floor. The two women, however, are fully committed to the experience, leaning together in the particular posture of people who drove a very long way and intend to get their money's worth.
