Somebody said stand by the arch, and the arch won, the way arches always did in the 1950s when a stucco doorway was considered a fitting backdrop for anyone dressed for company. The two women have arranged themselves shoulder to shoulder with the tidy symmetry of people who understand that a snapshot is really a small public appearance, rehearsed just enough to look unrehearsed.

One came in sensible white sandals and a checked shirtwaist, the outfit of a woman who has decided that comfort will still photograph as dignity. The other went a different way entirely, choosing a floral wrap dress and open-toe red heels on a garden path, a wardrobe decision that assumes the ground will behave itself for the length of one photograph.

Behind them the ironwork window grille and the ivy-strangled column suggest a house built when a bit of Mediterranean fantasy was standard issue for a respectable California street. The women hold their smiles at the exact wattage appropriate to a visit rather than a celebration, proof that mid-century hospitality had its own dress code, and everyone present had memorized it.
