A tulip farmer opened his fields to the public on a spring weekend, the way Dutch growers have done for centuries, except now there is a small wooden bridge with white railings and a parking lot with a 1950s sedan to mark the occasion as something organized and modern. Visitors in their Sunday clothes walk the rows between blocks of red, yellow, pink, and burgundy blooms, each color separated as though the flowers themselves were a kind of orderly accounting—proof that Dutch agriculture was rational, scientific, and available for inspection. The blue water reflects the bridge and the sky with the flat-country indifference of a canal, and the whole scene carries the assumption that a farmer's profit depends on people seeing what he grows, which means the public has become part of the business, and a Saturday afternoon in the tulip fields is now a destination, not a byproduct.
The historian's note
The Netherlands developed a significant commercial tulip-viewing culture in the mid-twentieth century, particularly in regions around Amsterdam and in North Holland where bulb cultivation dominated. Farmers established display gardens and open-field viewing days to sell bulbs directly to domestic and export customers, transforming the seasonal bloom into a visitor attraction. The practice built on centuries of Dutch horticultural expertise and the country's established reputation in international bulb markets. Such farms operated on the model of agritourism before the term existed—monetizing both the product and the experience of viewing it.
