Easter Sunday in the American South had a dress code, and it applied regardless of whether the child being dressed could walk in a straight line yet. This little girl, in a full-skirted yellow frock with a white Peter Pan collar, has been turned out with the care of someone preparing a small dignitary for a ribbon-cutting, then set loose on a patch of sandy Florida-style yard where every step threatens the white leather shoes.

The sandy soil, sparse St. Augustine grass at the edge of a concrete walk, and the young tropical shrub planted with optimism beside the front path are signatures of a recently built subdivision somewhere along the Gulf Coast or in coastal Florida, where developers in the 1950s sold lots that were still mostly sand and called it a lawn. The new neighborhood was full of young families doing exactly this: dressing the children in their best and pointing a camera at them on the one day a week they stood still.

She is smiling up at whoever is holding the camera — a parent shooting from a porch or step — with the unguarded confidence of a child who has not yet learned that the outfit and the yard are working against each other.
