On the image

Someone pulled the car over because the rock looked like it was stacked by hand, and in a sense it was, by about a billion years of shallow sea sediment before the Rockies shoved it sideways. The 1950s vacationer did not need to know the word Belt Supergroup to feel that the mountain was showing its work, layer after tilted layer, in a way the flatlands back home never did.

National parks in this decade were full of people who had just enough gasoline, just enough postwar optimism, and just enough Kodachrome to document a landscape they assumed would hold still for them. The spruce and fir crowding the foreground were doing what mountain forest always does at this elevation, thinning upward until the trees simply give up and let the rock take over.

Nobody in the frame is climbing that slope, and nobody was meant to; the point of the overlook was to stand safely below something enormous and call it a good trip. The mountain, for its part, had already been standing there for longer than the concept of a vacation.

The historian's note

The scene shows the characteristic tilted, banded rock faces of the Belt Supergroup, a sequence of Precambrian sedimentary layers that forms the backbone of Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. These formations, laid down as shallow-sea sediment more than a billion years ago and later folded and thrust upward during the building of the Rocky Mountains, are among the reasons the park was established in 1910 and heavily promoted afterward as a scenic wonder accessible by rail and, later, automobile.

By the 1950s, Glacier was a mature destination within the National Park Service system, reached by visitors traveling the Going-to-the-Sun Road and staying in park lodges built decades earlier by the Great Northern Railway. Amateur color photography of this kind, taken from roadside turnouts and maintained trails, forms a large part of the visual record of mid-century park tourism, documenting both the geology and the leisure culture that grew up around viewing it.
