Three girls stand posed in a driveway beside a bicycle and a two-tone sedan, dressed for what appears to be a summer day or family outing. The brick house behind them and the white garage with its peaked roof are the kind of modest suburban dwelling that was being built across America in the postwar years, when a family's first new car and a suburban lot represented everything the previous decade had promised. The middle girl holds the bicycle as though it has been placed in her hands for the photograph, a prop in a moment someone decided was worth recording. The car is so recently minted it still gleams, the kind of object that would have been driven slowly at first, with the assumption it would last. The bicycle is the older technology, already consigned to the girls' portion of the household economy—transportation, recreation, not investment. Nobody in this driveway would have questioned which one was which.
