Two girls in matching light-blue dresses stand in front of the Wynken, Blinken and Nod sculpture in Chicago's Lincoln Park, posed with the practiced patience of children who have been told to hold still. The monument, cast in bronze and dedicated to Eugene Field's 1889 nursery rhyme, was one of those civic objects the 1950s still took seriously — a poem about children sailing off in a wooden shoe, rendered in several tons of metal and installed where real children could climb on it. Behind them, a third girl has turned away to examine something at ground level, uninterested in the photograph, and two adults are bent toward each other in the absorbed conversation of people who have temporarily outsourced the children to a statue. The parents had brought the girls somewhere educational and pleasant, which in the 1950s meant a park with bronze art, and the girls had understood their assignment: stand next to the thing, look at the camera, wait to be released.
