On the image

The cottage sits at the water's edge with its roofline sagging at one corner, the kind of small settling that a builder in this era would have called character and an insurance adjuster would later call a total loss. Someone framed it for a summer of screen doors and cheap lumber, on the theory that a shack near water only needs to survive weather that hasn't happened yet. The dark gap torn open under the eave says that theory did not hold.

Debris is scattered across the yard in the unhurried way of a cleanup nobody has quite started, the kind of aftermath photograph families kept to show relatives what the hurricane did rather than what the place used to look like. The wires still run to the pole out front, hopeful and functionally irrelevant. Whoever owned this had a view of the bay that was, until recently, the whole point of owning it.

Across the water other small roofs stand in a row, apparently untouched, which is the specific cruelty of shoreline storms: they pick a house and move on, leaving the neighbors free to feel sympathy without inconvenience.
