St. Mark's Square in 1970s Venice offered a stage for tourists to experience history, a concept that primarily involved standing in large public spaces. Before personal devices became standard, the main way to confirm you were there was to stare intently at the famous structures or perhaps buy a souvenir.
Someone, at some point, decided the ancient paving stones of the piazza needed white geometric patterns. These lines, perhaps for crowd control or simply an unexplained civic urge for order, give the impression of a giant, unfinished board game played by an invisible hand.
The whole scene conveys the confidence of people engaging in a shared cultural ritual, a precursor to the modern selfie, where the important part was not just seeing it, but being seen seeing it.
The historian's note
St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, and one of the world's most famous urban spaces. The square is dominated by the Campanile di San Marco, a 98.6-meter (323 ft) tall bell tower, and the Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco, known for its Byzantine architecture and mosaics.
Flanking the square are the Procuratie Vecchie and Procuratie Nuove, grand arcaded buildings that once housed the offices of the Procurators of Saint Mark. Adjacent to the Basilica is the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the former residence of the Doge of Venice and seat of Venetian government.
During the 1970s, Venice remained a prominent international tourist destination, experiencing an increase in visitor numbers as air travel became more accessible. The square served as a central gathering point for tourists and locals, maintaining its historical role as the heart of Venetian civic and religious life.
