Sometime in the 1950s, an American with a camera and a full tank of gas pointed a lens at a canyon wall in the red-rock Southwest and decided this was the shot. The Kodachrome colors—cream sandstone striped with iron-oxide rust, a natural arch eroded into the cliff face—are exactly the palette that convinced a postwar generation the national parks were worth the two-day drive. The Interior Department had been running that argument since the 1930s, and by the 1950s it was winning.
The natural arch punched through the cliff is the kind of formation that Utah or Arizona produces without effort and that a tourist from Ohio finds cosmically improbable. Zion, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands—the Southwest had more of these than it had gas stations, and in the 1950s that was saying something. Whoever stood here believed they were capturing something remote and permanent, which was correct on both counts, though the parking lots would arrive soon enough.
What the camera actually recorded, without intending to, was the moment just before the American West became a managed experience. The canyon wall had been there for two hundred million years. It had about a decade left before the interpretive signage caught up with it.
